I am studying a specific language archive preserved at the Berlin Phonogram Archive of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin. It consists of the voices of Russian emigrants who were recorded during the First World War in German prisoner-of-war camps. By collecting, extracting, and transforming these relevant sounds and embedding them into images of the present, I evoke the ruling ideologies of macro-systems such as the state within migration history, where the micro and macro intersect, and I confront the present as an extended past. The sound is re-created from the noises of the prison, where the prisoners were forced, in the context of German field research, to sing or count numbers in their native languages.
